Patterson Family papers

Scope and Contents

These papers deal largely with Silas Gilbert Patterson and his family, but materials on other families are also included. His family resided in Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut, but the papers are from other areas of Connecticut as well. The papers consist primarily of personal and business letters, family genealogies, and advertisements from local businesses. Other families and persons with papers in the collection include John L. Andrews family, Bonney family, Lewish Marsh, Morse family, Rouse family, Gilbert family, Elnathan Patterson, and Seth Pierce.

Patterson was an amateur genealogist and included are some notes, presumably in his hand. There are also several articles and printed items collected on various subjects. There are several household inventories for tax purposes, land deeds, legal notices about Cornwall, Connecticut, and an annual report from Sharon, Connecticut. There are various pictures, and printed materials in the collection, as well as several pieces of poetry. Etchings include materials on Waterloo. As well, there are over 100 empty stamped envelopes.

Biographical or Historical Information

Ezra Gilbert married Mary Hollibird and had 9 children, the first born in 1757 and the youngest, Samuel, born in 1776. Polly Gilbert was the daughter of Samuel Gilbert and Laura Twiss. She was born December 30, 1800 in Warren, Connecticut. She married Sherman Patterson and had 3 children: Silas Gilbert in 1838, Burton Clark in 1839, and Henry Sherman in 1842. Silas Gilbert Patterson married Sarah Jane Sturtevant, born 1844, in 1866 and fathered 10 children. He was a Justice of the Peace and an attorney in Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut.

His brother Henry Sherman Patterson owned H.S. Patterson Contractor and Builder and Dealers of Lumber in Wollcottville, Connecticut. His brother Burton Clark Patterson owned Golden Farm in Wollcottville, Connecticut.

The Patterson Family purchased lands in the colony and later state of Connecticut between 1752 and 1801, with deeds in the names of Elnathan Patterosn and Silas Patterson, among others.
