This collection contains Franklin Merle Peterson's personal correspondence, newspapers, ephemera, and photographs from Peterson’s lifetime. Peterson was a veteran of the First World War in France and the Second World War in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Biographical or Historical Information

Franklin Merle Peterson born in Champaign, Illinois on August 7, 1896. At the age of 22, Peterson enlisted in the United States Army and trained at Camp Hanncock in Georgia. During World War I, Peterson served with the American Expeditionary Force in France. Peterson was honorably discharged in July 1919. After returning home Peterson became a teacher and married Olga Clotfelder on June 14, 1921. He was then commissioned in World War II into the Army Air Corps and retired in the United States Air Force reserves in 1956. Peterson worked for the Pekin Community High school in Illinois as the superintendent for twenty-seven years except for the brief period of active duty in World War II. Peterson completed his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel and passed away in July of 1984.
