Scope and Contents

Books, pamphlets, periodicals, manuscripts, and correspondence. This collection pertains to the life and work of poet, Kathleen Raine. There are books and pamphlets by Kathleen Raine, daing 1935-1990, and books by other authors with introductory material by Raine, dating 1932-1981. There are works edited or translated by Raine, which date 1945-1968, the originals of which are in French or Spanish. The secondary and miscellaneous works in the collection date 1967-1970, and are either books about Raine or books that she felt were significant to her writing. The books in this collection can be found in the library's online catalog. The periodicals date 1935-1990, and contain contributions by Raine, including off-prints. The manuscripts include "Yeat's Holy City of Byzantium," dating 1994, and an accompanying letter.

The correspondence in the collection dates from 1965-1998, with some material undated, and is mostly between George Harper and Raine, or Harper and others but relating to Raine. Some items contain notes, corrections, and additions to Raine's hand, and are related to the George Harper's and Kathleen Raine's friendship, and various other projects. Subjects covered by the collection include: poetry and poetry analysis and criticism, the fine arts, India, Tokyo, Japanese poems, Frances Horovitz, the fairy-faith in Celtic countries, W. B. Yeats, Dorothy Wellesley, plays, and existentialism.
