This collection consists of an oral history interview transcript of Joseph Jennings, who was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and worked as an aircraft radio operator during World War II and served in the South Atlantic guarding the Brazilian coastline near Rio do Janeiro. The interview covers his duties and anecdotes, like his training in Norfolk, VA, his emergency appendectomy, and his time in Dutch Guyana. The interview also describes his early years during the Great Depression in Oklahoma.

Biographical or Historical Information

Joseph Jennings was born in Oklahoma City on September 14, 1922. He graduated from high school in 1941 and was working for his father's advertising distributing agency when he heard of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He enlisted the following January and was sent to Norfolk Naval Base for training. There, he became a self-taught "struck" for a radio operator in planes, and later was trained as a gunner and did anti-submarine radar patrol on the Atlantic coast. His squadron was later deployed to the South American coastline patrolling the area from Barbados to Natal (Brazil). His duties included the training of some Brazilian troops and a convoy escort.

After the war, Jennings went to Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Mathematics in 1951. By the time of the interview on May 30, 2001, he was living in Sarasota, Florida.
