Scope and Contents

This collection contains two letters by James Gould Cozzens to Mr. Emmett B. Peter, Jr., concerning criticisms of some of his writing, as well as a copy of one letter, undated, by Mr. Emmett B. Peter, Jr., to Cozzens, and a "draft of article of which Cozzens reffered in his letter. Not yet published (4/2/63)." The two letters written by Cozzens to Mr. Emmett B. Peter, Jr., should be most helpful to any person writing for the public.

Biographical or Historical Information

Born in Chicago, Illinois, August 1903, James Gould Cozzens graduated Kent, Connecticut school, was a student at Harvard (1922-1924) and married to Bernice Baumgarten December 1931. Cozzens was an author of several books and many magazine articles. Writing was his chief occupation since sophmore year of college when his first novel, Confusion, was published. Between that time and 1949, the year his Guard of Honor was chosen as the 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner in fiction, Cozzens wrote nine other novels.
