Biographical or Historical Information
Still in existence as of 2007, the Florida State University (FSU) Undergraduate Policy Committee was first cited in the 1973 Faculty Handbook, when it was the Undergraduate Policy Council. Its purpose was to consider university-wide policies relating to undergraduate academic affairs.
According to the Bylaws of the FSU Faculty Senate, the Council originally comprised 20 faculty members appointed by the Faculty Senate Steering Committee for staggered three-year terms, one undergraduate student appointed for a one-year term by the President of Student Government, and the Executive Vice President or designee, ex-officio. The Council elected its own chairperson from among its faculty representatives.
During the period covered by these minutes, Bruce Bickley was the Chairperson. The Council made its recommendations to the Steering Committee, which transmitted the recommendations to the Faculty Senate for action. In the late 1970s, the Undergraduate Policy Council became the Undergraduate Policy Committee, and consisted of 11 faculty members, no more than three being from any one school, appointed by the Faculty Senate Steering Committee, with the advice and consent of the Faculty Senate.
