Biographical or Historical Information
As stated in the revised 1950 Constitution of the University Government Association, "the executive power of the University Government Association shall be vested in the University Government Association Executive Council, to be known as the University Council." This governing body met once a week. Meetings were open and all interested students were invited to attend. According to the 1950-51 Student Handbook, the presiding officer of the University Council was the University Government Association (UGA) President.
The Council appointed, upon the recommendation of the UGA President, standing committees that were responsible to the Council for the following divisions of student affairs: Athletics and Recreation; Elections; Organizations; Finance; Social Standards and Calendar of Events; Auditing; Budgeting; and Funds. The Chief Justice of the University Court made the recommendation for the Honor Committee to the Council. These committees were important in directing the extra-curricular programs on the FSU Campus.
The first UGA President that presided over the Council from 1950-1951 was Reuben Askew, who later became Florida Governor. In January 1952, there was another revision of the University Government Association Constitution, and the University Council's name was changed to the University Executive Council.
