Photocopy of Seminole war record issued at Quartermaster's store, Fort No. 6, East Florida. It is an invoice of Quarter Master stores turned over to Lieut. M. R. Patrick. It is signed by E. R. S. Canby, 2nd Lt. 2nd Infry, A.A.Q.M., Fort No. 6 East Florida, May 15, 1840.

Biographical or Historical Information

Canby, Edward R.S.: Entered service from Indiana, July 1, 1839. Was a major in the 10th Inf. in 1860. Rose to Major-General. Date of Commission May 7, 1864 during Civil War. Mustered out September 1, 1866. Murdered by Modoc Indians in Oregon, April 11, 1873.

Appointed Brig.-General March 31, 1862. Canby led the attack on Mobile and captured it in April 1865. On May 4, General Dick Taylor surrendered to General Canby all Confederate forces E. of Mississippi that had not already been captured, a total of 12,723 men.

On May 26, General Kirby Smith surrendered all the enemy's foreces west of the Mississippi to General Canby, a total of 10, 167 men.

Patrick, Marsena R.: Commissioned Brig.-General March 17, 1862, appointed from New York. Resigned June 12, 1865.
