Content Description
This collection relates to Carl Lyren who served in the United States Marine Corps in 2nd Marine Division the Pacific Theater. The materials of this collection are made up of maps, unclassified documents from both Japanese and U.S. forces, books, letters, interviews with veterans, photographs, newspaper clippings, and personal notes made by Carl Lyren in his research in writing on the battle of Peleliu, also in this collection is the original manuscript of the publication Dogged Courage: The Struggle for Peleliu, 1944.

Biographical / Historical
Born on November 4, 1925, U.S. Marine Marine Corps Sergeant Carl Lyren first served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II from 1943-1946 with Company C, 2nd Amtrac (Amphibious tractor) Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. He served on Saipan and Iheyajima, and survived a Japanese Kamikaze attack on LST 884 off Okinawa on April 1, 1945. He reenlisted in the Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He studied at the University of Indiana, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1954 with a Master’s degree in International Relations. Carl Lyren was a writer all his life, and was employed at many major advertising agencies in Chicago and New York, also specializing in food writing and authoring several cookbooks. Also among his publications include French Cooking for the American Table (with Rene Verdon), 365 Ways to Cook Chicken, and Dogged Courage: The Struggle for Peleliu, 1944. Lyren passed away on June 12, 2003.
