This collection relates to Corporal Charles F. Silzer who served with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He participated in the battles of Cape Gloucester, New Britian, Peleliu, and Okinawa and occupation of China. The collection contains letters Silzer wrote to his fiance, later wife, Florence Erickson, photographs of Silzer, and a framed discharge document.

Biographical / Historical

Charles F. Silzer was born Chicago, IL on March 5, 1924. He entered the United States Marine Corps in January 1943, assigned as a replacement with the 1st Marine Division, and sent overseas in September 1943. At the time Silzer was engaged and married Florence A. Erickson after being discharged on January 29, 1946. Silzer passed away on February 10, 2010 and is buried at Chapel Hill Gardens South, Oak Lawn, IL.
