Content Description
This collection relates to John J. Ingersoll who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to England until shortly after D-Day. He provided non-combat support to the invading allied forces into Paris. This collection contains books, handbooks, pamphlets, and maps from the U.S. Army, British Information Services, and the German Wehrmacht in German and English.

Biographical / Historical
John Joseph Ingersoll was born January 11, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Temple University and received a master's degree in economics from the University of Michigan. In 1948, he married Betty Dobson Ingersoll. Ingersoll served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to England until shortly after D-Day, when he provided non-combat support to the invading allied forces into Paris. Following the war, he studied at the temporary Foreign Service Institute in Biarritz, France, then entered into his diplomatic career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer where he served until 1975. His posts included Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Argentina and England. He served as the U.S. representative to multilateral commodity councils, including the International Coffee Organization, in London from 1965 to 1971. He was an authority on the international coffee trade. He passed away May 7, 1999 at the age of 79. He is buried at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
