Scope and Contents

This oral history interview transcript relates to the life experiences of Catherine Black, an American woman who grew up in the Great Depression and came of age during World War II. Black recounts growing up during the Great Depression, graduating college, her life on the home front, and her life after the war. She discusses raising a child when her husband was at war, living in Arkansas near a Japanese internment camp, becoming a early widow after the war, her remarrige, and her second husband's experiences as a B17 Bomber Pilot during the War.

Biographical/ Historical Information

Catherine Black was born August 18, 1922 in Morrilton, AR, the daughter of John and Vera Johnson Patton. She married Dewitt Talmadge Black Jr. on February 12, 1944 in Memphis, TN. He passed away in March 1957. She then married Lane Jordan in Crossett, AR, and he passed away in 1993 after 35 years of marriage. She moved to Mountain Home in 1994. Thirdly, she married Russell Heldenbrand in Mountain Home, AR in 1996 and he passed away in 2003. Catherine had 3 sons: Dewitt Black, Dr. John Patton Black, AR, and William Lawrence Black. Catherine passed away on April 16, 2011 in Mountain Home,AK and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Morrilton, AK.
