According to the interview, Daniel Duffy was born in 1924 in Harlem, New York City. He attended Stuyvesant High School and volunteered with the U.S. Navy through the V-12 progam where he was accepted at the Pratt Institute for Chemical Engineering. He was also assigned to Columbia University and Wesleyan University. He attended sea training at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx, New York. Duffy was commissioned for landing craft training in Hollywood Beach Florida, and he was eventually selected as a gunfire liason where he was sent on the USS Louisville to Okinawa. But before he went on the Louisville it was struck by the Kamikazi. As an officer, he helped censor letters for the U.S. Government. When the war was over, Duffy used the GI Bill to finish school at Columbia University in industrial engineering.
