Content Description
John E. Hinrichs served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre (Iwo Jima, Hawaii). He enlisted before Pearl Harbor, was assigned to Midway, then the 8th Field Depot, and was sent in as a part of the Army of Occupation of Japan. He discussed how the army affected him later in life. This collection contains an oral history interview transcript.

Biographical / Historical
Born December 9, 1918, John E. Hinrichs enlisted in the U.S. Marines at the age of 21 in 1941. He read orders to Iwo Jima on open waters, arrived in the vicinity on February 17, 1945, and sustained a kamikaze attack on February 21 before going ashore on February 22, 1945 (D+3). Hinrichs retired from the Marines in 1961 with the rank of Captain. He received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Union College, New York in 1950. He spent 33 years leading the Large Motor Department for General Electric. Hinrichts passed away on May 21st, 2018 at the age of 98.
