Melvin Magidson transcript
Scope and Contents
This oral history interview transcript pertains to Melvin Magidson, who was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force in February of 1943 and was discharged in October of 1945 with the rank of lieutenant. In the transcript, Magidson mostly recounts various Air Force bases that he trained at throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the northeast. Magidson never served overseas due to the war in Europe and in the Pacific both ending shortly after the end of his training.

Biographical / Historical
Melvin Magidson was born on August 11, 1924, in upstate New York. After graduating high school at the age of 16, Magidson studied at Cornell University and enlisted for the U.S. Army Air Force shortly after his 18th birthday. Magidson would go on to train in various cities throughout the U.S., including Atlantic City, Montgomery, Bainbridge, Thomasville, and Tallahassee. Two days after Magidson was sent to New Jersey to be deployed to fight in Europe, Germany officially surrendered. After marrying Dorothy Lee Costin the following June, Magidson was sent to California to be deployed to fight in Okinawa with eighty other men - shortly thereafter, Japan surrendered. He was discharged in October of 1945 and went on to be in the first graduating class of men at Florida State University. Melvin Magidson passed away on January 11, 2013, and is buried at Holly Hill Cemetery in Port St. Joe, FL.
