This collection relates to Lyle D. Armstrong and his service in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The collection contains a veteran’s questionnaire where he shares his experience in service and recalls a memory of being in Manila when the Japanese Envoys came to speak to General MacArthur. He also mentions that he kept in contact with some of the men he met in service. The collection also contains photographs of Armstrong and his three older brothers, who also served in World War II.

Biographical / Historical

Lyle D. Armstrong was born on September 29, 1926 in Blue Hill, Nebraska. He attended Blue Hill High School and in 1944, he began his service in the Army. He received Infantry basic training for fifteen weeks at Fort Hood, Texas, and was then sent to Fort Meade, Maryland. As the war ended in Europe, Armstrong was sent to Camp Stoneman, California, by troop train. On May 29, 1945, Armstrong left San Francisco on ​the USS Briscoe to serve overseas in the Philippines. His duties overseas included being a clerk in Recovered Personnel Division, where he processed U.S citizens back into American hands. He also handled civilians, including Filipinos and those from other branches. Armstrong was discharged from the Army on December 3, 1946, after receiving various awards such as the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and a World War II Victory medal. He had three older brothers that served in World War II as well. Armstrong passed away on July 3, 2019, and is buried at Lakeside Memorial Lawn in Folsom, California.
