Content Description
This collection relates to Dr. Donald R. Roberts who served as a World War II surgeon with the 47th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in North Africa and Europe. This collection contains his memoir titled The Other War: A World War II Journal where he details his time at Fort Bragg, in North Africa, Sicily, England, Normandy, Belgium, Germany, and Dachau.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Donald R. Roberts was born on October 4, 1912 in New York. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree and studied medicine two years at West Virginia University. He completed his medical education in 1937 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Roberts served as a World War II surgeon for the 47th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in North Africa and Europe. He sent testimony to the Nuremberg Trials concerning the inhuman conditions he found at Dachau Concentration Camp. After the war, Dr. Roberts returned to practice medicine in Elkins, West Virginia. During his 45 years of medical practice, he delivered 5,612 babies. Roberts passed away on July 14, 1986 in Elkins, West Virginia. He is buried in Beverly Cemetery in Randolph County, West Virginia.
