This collection relates to Chief Petty Officer Luther Samuel Ely Jr. who served as an Electrician's Mate aboard the USS Ordronaux during World War II. This collection contains a manuscript titled "World War II Experiences of Luther Samuel Ely, Jr." where Ely describes his experiences in Basic Training, at Fore River Shipyard, and in England, Ireland, and the Mediterranean from 1942 to 1944.

Biographical / Historical

Luther Samuel Ely Jr. was born on May 3, 1907. On September 1942, Ely was drafted into the United States Armed Services at the age of 35 as a 2nd class Electrician. He attended basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station and Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. Ely worked aboard the Ordronaux destroyer from February 13, 1943 to 1944. He served aboard the ship in England, Ireland, and the Mediterranean. During his service, Ely made 13 crossings and logged over 200,000 miles. Ely passed away on January 13, 1998 at the age of 90. He is interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklynn, Pennsylvania.
