Scope and Contents

This collection relates to Geoffrey Styles who was eleven years old and lived in Romford, 14 miles Northeast of London when World War II began for Great Britain. The papers include an oral interview transcript and audiotape recording. The collection also includes a letter written from Normandy during World War II by Jesse Davis Binns.

Biographical or Historical Information

Geoffrey Styles was born on December 2, 1929, in Romford, within the London, England metropolitan area. His sister Joan was born in 1924, and brother Alan in 1926.  Geoffrey Styles served as a messenger boy during World War II for the Civil Defense in Romford.  He recounts the German air raids during the 1940 Blitz and later the V-1, V-2, rocket attacks on London in 1944, which included Romford.  He also recounts life during the war, and the actions taken by his family during air raids.  Additional related collection 00.0176 for Geoffrey Styles contains BBC taped interviews.
