Biographical or Historical Information
Mary Ann Lindley is one of two At-Large Commissioners for Leon County. She was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2012 after resigning from a long career in journalism to run for public office.
She became a journalist at age 16, starting with summer jobs at a weekly newspaper in a small prairie town In Missouri, near where Jesse James was shot and the Pony Express started its journey west.
Commissioner Lindley earned her degree in journalism at the University of Missouri and has lived in Florida her entire adult life, primarily in Tallahassee where she was a columnist, reporter and eventually editorial page editor of the Tallahassee Democrat. She also worked as a political writer and capital bureau chief for the New York Times Florida Newspaper Group and as legislative editor at the Miami Herald in the 1970s.
Among her community activities, she currently serves on the board of directors of the Capital Tiger Bay Club and The Village Square. She is a lay member of the 2nd Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee and was appointed to the U.S. Federal Court Magistrate Selection Committee. She has been a volunteer in the public schools and with numerous nonprofits and charities. In 2011, she was one of 12 women leaders around the world who was invited by the government of Taiwan to participate in a women's issues program and tour of that nation.
Lindley, who is married to Charlie Nuzzo, has been honored as the Florida Public Relations Association's Communicator of the Year, the recipient of the Knight-Ridder Jim Batten Excellence Award for editorial excellence, a national award, and won numerous writing awards over her years as a journalist, which included serving two years as president of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.
