Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a wide range of documents maintained by Joseph Lannutti over the course of his professional career. Documents in this collection range from administrative papers to correspondence to teaching materials. The papers include correspondence about Lannutti's role in the recruitment of Nobel prize-winning Paul Dirac to Florida State University and press release information when Dirac joined the FSU faculty. The series names generally reflect the content and the organization is based on the original filing system utilized by Lannutti. Lannutti's handwritten notes are written in shorthand.

Biographical or Historical Information
Joseph Edward Lannutti was born May 4, 1926 in Cedar Hollow, Pennsylvania. Lannutti was drafted and served in the US Army during World War II. Following the end of World War II, Lannutti used the GI Bill to finance his education in physics. Lannutti received his B.S. in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1950, his M.S. in physics from University of Pennsylvania in 1953, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1957.
After completing his Ph.D., Lannutti became an assistant professor at FSU and established the first High Energy Physics group in the southeastern US. In 1982, Lannutti started the FSU-FAMU College of Engineering and served as the first dean of the college. In 1984, he proposed the creation of the FSU Supercomputer Computations Research Institute and served as the director until 1993. In 1993 he was appointed Associate Vice President for Research at FSU and served in that position until his death in 1997.

Abstract
The collection consists of a wide range of documents maintained by FSU Physics professor Dr. Joseph Lannutti over the course of his professional career. Dr. Lannutti established the High Energy Physics group at Florida State University in 1957, started the FSU-FAMU College of Engineering in 1982, and began the Florida State University Supercomputer Computations Research Institute in 1984. The collection was a gift of the Lannutti family to Florida State University in 2003.
