Documents of the British possessions of East and West Florida
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of 40 signed documents, 7 autographed letters signed, and 6 letters signed, relating to the civil and military administration of the British possessions of East and West Florida. This is an important collection of manuscript material, apparently all unpublished, related to East and West Florida, which was part of the British Empire just prior to the American Revolution. Both were obtained from Spain at the Treaty of Paris in 1763. West Florida was captured by Governor Galvez of Louisiana in 1781, and East Florida reverted to Spain and was evacuated in 1784.
Included in this collection are materials related to the following persons and topics: Major John Campbell, Lt. Col. Ralph Walsh, General Sir Frederick Haldimand, George Johnstone (Governor of West Florida), Patrick Tonyn (Governor of East Florida), Lt. Col. James Bruce, Peter Chester (Governor of West Florida), Lt. Col. M. G. Glasier, Pensacola, Florida, Lt. Gov. Monforte Brown, fortifications at Pensacola, Florida and Savannah, Georgia, troop movements from Pensacola and Mobile to the Mississippi River, St. Augustine, Florida, James Moore, Rangers, Lord George Germain (Secretary of State for the Colonies), Charlestown, South Carolina, military and naval intelligence, Lords of the Treasury, construction in Pensacola, French and rebel attacks, Johnstown, New York, and London. There are 42 items on West Florida and 11 items on East Florida.

These papers are from a large collection from the British Treasury and army paymaster's papers which were in possession of John G. Bell of Manchester, in 1857, and which were later acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps.
