Scope and Contents

Personal, family, and business correspondence, land deeds, letter of testamentary, papers of the administrator of the estate of Dr. F.A. Byrd. Business and personal papers, certificates of membership, licenses to practice as Physician and Surgeon, 13 early envelopes (some with stamps attached); business correspondence, statements, invoices, and one bound account book.

Orders and invoices for marble slabs and headstones for family graves (with names, etc.); declaration of taxable property, tax receipts, note payable to Harrison Reed, Governor of Florida; certificate of "Amnesty Oath;" codicil to a Last Will, letter testamentary. Sales of land, land deeds, bill of sale, sales of land at public auction, contacts; sales of enslaved persons, custodianship of black children, etc. Civil War letters, charter of Home Guard organization with list of names of volunteers; "Hints for the consideration of White Men," (relates to problems with slaves) etc. Florida politics, including one newspaper clipping. Family correspondence (one letter pertains to yellow fever in Florida, one to travel by vessel from St. Marks to New Orleans, and one to early development of St. Teresa); philosophy, poetry, and a recipe for making "Hard Soap." Thirty seven items in poor condition have been photocopied for use to preserve the originals.

Biographical or Historical Information

A physician and surgeon, Dr. Byrd's records show that he also had a farm. Dr. Byrd was born April 16, 1822, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and died in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, December 26, 1874.
