Scope and Contents

Technical Sergeant Seth A. McKinney served as a flight engineer and a gunner on a B-24 Liberator stationed at Cerignola, Italy. He completed over 40 missions as a part of the 767th Bombardment Squadron, 461st Bombardment Group of the 15th Air Force.  This collection includes photographs, documents, and artifacts.

Biographical or Historical Information

Seth A. McKinney was born in Long Grove, Iowa on August 26, 1918. Prior to enlisting on October 24, 1942, McKinney worked as an automobile mechanic. He completed his training at Keesler Field, Mississippi, Biloxi, Missouri, Boise, Idaho, and Nashville Gunnery School. On February 10, 1944, he was deployed to Italy and arrived in Cerignola thirteen days later. McKinney served as an engineer and gunner aboard B-24 Liberators targeting Axis resources. During his 12th mission on April 23, 1944, he and his crew were to forced to bail out of their bomber over the Adriatic Sea. They landed on the partisan run island of Vis and were rescued ten days later. After over 40 missions, McKinney and his crew were given other duties in July of 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters and the Bronze Star for his duties. On April 7, 1945, McKinney was discharged as a Technical Sergeant at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. After the war, McKinney married Virginia Armstrong in 1947. Seth A. McKinney passed away on May 21, 1993, at the age of 74 in Pompano Beach, Florida.
