Biographical or Historical Information
Carlton H. Stauffer was born in Hughestown, PA on July 10, 1923, and passed away on August 15, 2010, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, PA. He was 87. He was married to Doris Hunt Schaus. His first wife, Elaine Ramage Stauffer, passed away in 1987. He graduated from West Pittston High School, class of 1941, where he served as a class officer.
Stauffer served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War as an infantryman with Company G, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He participated in the landings on Utah Beach, the liberation of Paris, and the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, during which time he was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. He was a member of the 4th Division Association and attended the 40th and 50th D-Day reunions in Normandy, France. His wartime correspondence and memoirs are a part of the Pennsylvania State Archives, Harrisburg, and the New York State Archives, Albany.
Following his discharge from active duty, Stauffer joined his father's automobile dealership in West Pittston, PA. He spent his entire business career in the automobile business with his final years in business in Clarks Summit, PA. Stauffer was active in civic affairs throughout his life. He served on the West Pittston School Board from 1957 to 1959. He was president of the Pittston Rotary Club and a Past District Governor in Rotary International District 741. He served as president of the West Pittston Library Association. Mr. Stauffer also was a Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania AAA Motor Club and was President of the Motor Club from 1981 to 1983. He was a past master mason and awarded the fifty year Masonic Service Emblem by the R.W. Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania in 1997.
