Hilbert Levitz was born in 1931 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania to Lithuanian parents. He is the youngest of five children, one of which enlisted with the Women's Army Corps. Like other school children, he helped spot planes and participated in war bond drives. He graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1953 and taught at the United States Army Signal School. Levitz then went on to Pennsylvania State University and received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1965. From there he taught at various institutions before coming to Florida State University in 1969.
