Scope and Contents
This collection contains an oral history transcript of Staff Sergeant Charles Diedling, a flight engineer on a B-24 with the 460th Bomb Group at Spinazola, Italy. Charles Diedling discusses his training as a flight engineer and waist gunner for the B-24 at Keesler AFB, Mississippi and Loredo AFB, Texas. In June of 1944, he was assigned to the 460th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force in Spinazola, Italy. Diedling was shot down over Germany becoming a prisoner of war.

Biographical or Historical Information
Charles Diedling served his country during WWII as a flight engineer on B-24 bombers, flying combat missions over Germany and other European countries. On August 7th, 1944 his plane was shot down during a battle with enemy fighters. He was wounded and captured by German forces. During the winter of 1945, he and other POW's were force-marched across Germany. This march lasted 86 days and covered 600 miles, resulting in the deaths of many incarcerated persons. After the war, he met and married Frances Albrecht.
