Biographical or Historical Information

William R. Lueders was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 20, 1915. He graduated from high school in 1933, and the "Great Depression" kept him from going to college. He worked for a German motion picture laboratory prior to World War II. He was drafted into the US Army in 1941.

After Officers' Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, NJ, Lueders became an officer with the rank of Second Lieutenant.  Lueders underwent Signal Corps training and worked in the Training Film Production Laboratory at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He first landed in North Africa on his way to Italy. His company recorded film coverage of the Fifth Army entering Rome, Italy which he details in the oral history interview. He explains a photographer’s typical operation. Lueders describes how some of the men played American jazz music in their free time. His company joined the Seventh Army in southern France. He was in Austria when the war in Europe ended. He returned to the US in November 1945, but he was not officially separated until January 1946.  Lueders passed away on Feburary 16, 2015.
