Biographical or Historical Information

Murphy Roy Hinson was born October 26, 1891 in Gadsden County, Florida, son of M.N. and Julia Chester Hinson. His father, a farmer, was a native of Hinson and his mother was from Cairo, Georgia.

Hinson received an A.B.E. from the University of Florida in 1924, followed by a Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1925. In 1931 he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from George Peabody College.

After his schooling he entered the teaching profession in Florida. In 1927 he accepted an appointment as State Supervisor of High Schools. He served in this office for five years until July 1932 when he was appointed State Director of Instruction.

In 1936 he joined the faculty of Florida State University as an Associate Professor of Education. In 1937 he became a full professor.

On June 4, 1921 Dr. Hinson married Elberta Hentz, born November 23, 1893, in Bristol, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Hentz. They had a son, Murphy Roy Hinson, Jr. born on June 13, 1932.

Dr. Hinson died in 1952.
