Donald Nelson papers
Scope and Contents
Donald Nelson served in the 59th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 6th Armored Division and the 36th Field Artillery in the European (ETO), North African, and Mediterranean Theaters. Nelson was a technician, 5th grade (medic). The collection includes a memoir of his experience covering the period January 27,1942 to October 30, 1945.

Biographical or Historical Information
In this memoir, Donald Nelson writes about his induction and training at Fort Snelling, MN, Camp Grant, IL, and Fort Chaffee, AR, as well as his military service in Algeria (Oran), North Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. Topics include camp life, training, sea travel, and his experiences in Europe as part of the military and with the general population (though he specifically avoids the "fighting war"). There are photocopies of his discharge papers, information on his unit and training camp, and copies of V-Mail and Christmas cards. Foreign currency, photographs from his tour of duty, political cartoons, a unit photograph, and a map of Europe on which he has marked his travels are also included.
