Scope and Contents

Douglas Leach served as a U.S. Navy officer during World War II on the U.S.S Elden in the Pacific Theater. His letters of correspondence to family and friends are about his daily life, on the ship and off. His family's letters hold information on how rationing and censorship affected the American family unit during WWII. There are photographs included of Leach's niece and sister.

Biographical or Historical Information

Douglas Edward Leach was born on May 5, 1920, in Providence, Rhode Island. He enlisted in the Navy on January 24, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts and discharged in Boston on April 14, 1946. He spent his years in the Navy stationed in multiple places in the United States and on the U.S.S. Elden (DE 264).  The Elden arrived in the Pacific area at Pearl Harbor on November 16, 1943. The Elden participated in the Marianas Island campaign, Iwo Jima, Ulithi, and Occupation Duty in the Far East.  The Elden was decommissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard on January 18, 1946. After the war, Leach taught at Vanderbilt University from 1956 to 1986 and ended his career as professor emeritus of American history at Vanderbilt University.
