Biographical or Historical Information

Celia Shanker Fine was born on September 7, 1919 in Virginia and served as a secretary at the Department of Agriculture on the Home Front in Washington, DC, during WWII. She was a typist and stenographer for the school lunch program, and her collection reflects her viewpoint as a Jewish-American civilian. Her letters were written to her then-boyfriend, Joel I. Fine, whom she later married, and mentions her three brothers' involvement in the war, changes in American society, war-related romances, concerts, and changes after the war ended. There are 67 letters in this collection dated from 1944 to 1945. Fine passed away in Falls Church, VA on July 20, 1980.
