Scope and Contents
The collection contains a proclamation relating to the ceremony when crossing the equator, a veteran's questionnaire, honorable discharge papers, a summons to the equator crossing, the USS La Grange's (transport ship, APA) Plan of The Day for January 26, 1945 and March 20, 1945, a copy of an April 1945 Okinawa newsletter,the Plan of the Week for the USS La Grange for March 22, 1945- April 1, 1945, a ship board newsletter dated April 2, 1945, a letter from Solomon to his Father,a second newsletter dated April 12, 1945, the program to a ship memorial service, a letter home dated Spetember 3, 1945, photocopies of photographs taken of Solomon and mates aboard ship, copies of newspaper articles relating to Okinawa, a written history of the USS La Grange (APA-124), and three black and white photographs of the equator ceremony and sailors relaxing in the Pacific.

Biographical or Historical Information
Eli Solomon was a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class of Jewish and Turkish decent, and joined the U.S. Navy to fight the Germans, going through basic and hospital training. He describes experiences on Manus island, serving on the U.S.S. La Grange and facing anti-semitism, dealing with assorted medical problems including surgery on a sailor, and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He mentions kamikaze attacks on the ship off the coast of Okinawa.

This collection relates to Eli Solomon who served as a Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class and medic in the United States Navy on board the U.S.S. La Grange in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The collection contains an oral history transcript, photographs, letters, and documents.
