Biographical or Historical Information

Joseph Freilick completed basic training with the Army's 660th Tank Destroyer Battalion at Camp Hood, TX. He joined the 102nd Infantry Division at St. Pierre Eglise, France, in 1944. He was injured in campaigns in Europe. He was promoted to S/Sgt. early in 1945. He was awarded six medals, including the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). On 14 April 1945, his division came upon 1016 burned bodies of political and military prisoners of the SS in Gardelegen. His manuscript discusses his being in the hospital, going to religious services, the other commanding officers of his division, receiving the Combat Infantryman Badge, his promotion, Prisoners of War, and sexual encounters.
