Publix Gender Discrimination Case files

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 2012-0301

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of paperwork from the law firm of Thomas A. Warren, Tallahassee, Florida, as well as copies of most of the court filings in the case, divided into three series: Court Filings, Administrative, and Correspondence. Court filings include pleadings, motions, depositions, interrogatories, requests for documents, objections, responses, and other notices to Court among other types of legal documents. This makes up the bulk of the collection. The administrative documents consist primarily of witness files, the list of claimants, precedents and other legal research, interoffice memorandums, and other miscellaneous documents. The Correspondence files include a variety of counsel correspondence as well as "not qualified challenges" from individuals seeking to be included in the class action suit. The bulk of these documents cover the entire time frame of the suit.

Biographical or Historical Information

In July of 1995, twelve current and former Publix employees filed a class-action lawsuit against Florida corporation Publix Supermarkets, Inc. alleging discrimination against the company's approximately 45,000 female employees. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court of Tampa, FL, with three law firms representing the plaintiffs. The paperwork in this collection represents the documents of attorney Thomas A. Warren, Tallahassee, Florida. The case ended with a $81.5 million dollar settlement in January, 1997, with Publix admitting no wrongdoing. Nearly 38,000 current and former employees were awarded in the suit. At the time it was considered the largest workplace discrimination case in terms of the number of people it covered.
