This collection consists of an oral history transcript of an interview with 2nd Lt. James J. Crooke, who served in World War II. Crooke served in the Army Air Corps with the 303rd Bomb Group in the European Theater (ETO).

This item is a day-by-day account of work done and/or activities in the area of Centerville, Alabama. The author is unknown, and it is poorly written and in poor condition. It provides a description of menial or slavish labor performed, such as picking corn, picking cotton and slaughtering pigs and beef. It is interesting only in that it furnishes an insight into how people lived and worked during the early 1800s.

The Florida State University Southern Business History Center Records include, correspondence to and from the center, including memos, form letters, responses, questionnaire, annual reports, photographs and publications; and oral interviews recorded in May and June, 1954 and August 1956 on 1/4 inch audio tape reels. Scope and Contents Two documents pertaining to Parole of Civil War Prisoner of War Suval D. Crawford, Private of the Waddells, Ala., Vols. C.S.A. One dated Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 9, A.D. 1863, filled in and signed by Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton, C.S.A., Commanding, on the 4th day of July, 1863, "do in pursuance of the terms of capitulation of the City of Vicksburg and its garrison, give this solemn parole under oath..." The document is also signed by Suval D. Crawford. The other document, dated Columbus, Georgia, May 19, 1865, Headquarters Calvary Corps, M.D.M., is a declaration by Suval D. Crawford that "I will not bear arms against the United States of America..." and...

This item is a United States certificate of transfer of public land in "The Tallapoosa Land District Alabama," (1845) to Pul-sey, one of the Creek Tribe of Indians. The transfer of land to Pul-Sey was, "by virtue of a Treaty between the United States and the said Creek Tribe of Indians, made by the 24th day of March 1832." The certificate is dated July 9, 1845. Other names mentioned were: Nat Macon Thornton & Co., Henry Meadows, J. Knox Walker, Secretary of the President, and S. H. Laughlin, Recorder of the General Land Office.

Scope and Contents This item is a plantation record book and appears to be the financial records of William Armistead, who either owned or managed one or more large plantations or farms. He also acted as guardian for several children, as indicated by entries for tuition and books, as well as entries for Orphans Court. He was also involved in land deals and skilled blacksmith work. Some places mentioned, Candy's Landing and Greensboro, can be located on an early map of Alabama, indicating that the activities recorded took place somewhere in west Alabama.
