Cecil Blumenstein transcript

Cecil Blumenstein (served 1943-1945) discusses his experiences in the 13th Armored Division in Germany in the winter and spring of 1945. Blumenstein was captured and spent a brief period of time in a POW camp before being liberated and sent back to the front. He fought in several engagements. This collection consists of an interview transcript.

Captain Hugh Black Papers

Scope and Contents The papers include letters and one diary written during the Civil War (1863-1864) by Black to his wife, Mary Ann Black, from various places in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia and contain descriptions of army life and of the battlefields. There is also a series of letters and accounts (1901-1913) between Black and a Tallahassee merchant, Julius Diamond, two land deeds (1857-1858) relating to land of the Forbes' Purchases, and a letter to Black from J.B. Whitfield, Treasurer of the State of Florida and later a Supreme Court Justice. Charles P. Campbell papers

Scope and Contents

Charles Campbell was bombardier on a B-17 who was shot down over Linz, Austria and captured by the Germans. While in captivity, he was sent to Mauthausen concentration camp and managed to keep a journal of his experiences there. He served with the 483rd Bombardment Group. Just prior to the war's end, Campbell was transferred to an unidentified Stalag and credits this with saving his life. The collection includes reproductions of 483rd Bomb Group artwork, a statement and picture of the Mauthausen concentration camp from after the war, a World War II memoir with pictures and documents and a copy of his obituary.

This collection follows a woman who worked in the Red Cross administration at the 312th Station Hospital in England, and the 239th Station Hospital in France. It includes letters from the nurse to her mother and father, a local newspaper from the 312th Station Hospital, 2 portraits, 3 photographs of the English countryside and Stonehenge (taken by Eli Garfield Gifford), dog tags, and a modern US Military ID card. Maxine Newlander papers

Maxine Newlander served as a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II. Serving in the United States as well as in Guam, Newlander wrote almost daily to her family back home describing her experiences in the Navy and the nature of her work. In letters she sent home to her family during the war, she describes her social life on the island of Guam, her life as a Navy Nurse, and her longing for the war to be over. The letters span from 1944 to 1945. The photographs illustrate Maxine Newlander's life in the Navy.

McDuffie claimed to be the sailor kissing a nurse in the World War II Victory over Japan August 15, 1945 photograph which was taken by Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. The collection includes various documentation, testimony, interviews, polygraph examination results, photographs, forensic examination reports, and documents related to supporting the claim by McDuffie.

This collection relates to the nursing career of Editha Anderson Shaw, which began in 1944 as a member of the U.S. States Cadet Nurses Corps in 1946. This collection contains photographs, correspondence, an oral history transcript, and a series of objects. The bulk of collection focuses on Shaw’s training at the School of Nursing at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia and Children’s Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC. The collection includes an extensive oral history about her childhood, education, observation about racial segregation in the south, medical care offered to returning World War II veterans, and postwar career in nursing.

Sketch of General Anderson's life

Scope and Contents This sketch was written by General James Patton Anderson while at his home in Monticello, Florida, recuperating from a wound he had received on the evening of the 31st of August, 1864, while in command of his division at the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia, during the Civil War. The first ten pages of the sketch are written by Anderson himself and the last page contains additional information added by Etta Adair Anderson, his wife, and Margaret Bybee Anderson, their daughter. Written by the attorney that he was, the manuscript is concise, well-written, and five of the ten pages that he wrote contain valuable information about his experiences as an officer during the Civil War. Leona and Vince wrote letters to their sister, Josephine Gaudio, who saved all of these items. Both Vincent and Leona served in the Pacific Theater. Leona served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the China Burma Indian Theater with the 172nd General Hospital and Vincent in the U.S. Army on New Guinea.
