B. F. Hammond Civil War Letters

Photostats of the Civil War letters by B.F. Hammond written during 1863 and 1864 from various camps in Virginia to members of his family in South Carolina. All letters were written on battlefields and contain vivid descriptions of "the bloody struggle." Also known as MSS 0-135.

Ballads of Thomas Cobbe

Bound manuscript copy of Legends (After the Basque), containing nineteen "Tales of Faiƫry" written in the winter of 1877-1878 by Thomas Cobbe, adapted from Basque Legends by Wentworth Webster (1877). They comprise 224 pages with 20 original drawings by Janet Finlay Cobbe. The back cover is in poor condition with two of the metal corner pieces still attached. Manuscript pages are in excellent condition and the handwriting is legible.

Bank of Florida Letter

Scope and Contents

The three page letter, signed by E.G. Booth, secretary to D.S. Kennedy, Esq. of New York, gives a list of drafts drawn on several individuals and then the details of a bill of lading covering 41 bales of cotton, all being sent for discount. The postscript refers to the financial difficulties then existing in Florida banking circles.

Barbara Morrison Secretary of State war ballot scrapbook

Scrapbook of the Administration of the Official War Ballot in the Office of Secretary of State. A project done by Barbara Morrison, 'intern' in the Office of the Secretary of State. Subject is World War II absentee war ballots. It documents the administration of Public Law 712 (Federal) which provides for absentee voting by service personnel serving away from place of residence.

Bartholomew Lynch Journal

Scope and Contents

Journal in manuscript kept by US Army Private Bartholomew M. Lynch, commanded by Lieutenant John Graham during the Florida War. Early entries document his training and travel from New York to Florida on board the "Southern liner called America." Includes an eyewitness description of the captive Seminole leader Osceola, dated May 2, 1837.

Pages one and two are missing; page three begins with an entry for October 3, 1836.

Bellamy-White Duel

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a three-page letter by Edwin Pugsley that gives some background on Senator William White and Abraham Bellamy, both of Monticello, Florida, principals of the duel, and a detailed description of the "English Duelling Pistols" chosen by them. Also, how Mr. Pugsley came into possession of the information about the historic duel and of the pistols.

The pistols, still in Mr. Pugsley's possession as of the writing of the letter in 1958, are illustrated in a little book Famous guns from famous collections by H. W. Bowman.

Ben C. Willis Addresses and Article

Scope and Contents

Addresses delivered by former Florida Circuit Judge Ben C. Willis and an article written by Willis for the Florida Heritage Foundation News and Views. These materials are useful to researchers studying Tallahassee life during the 1930s. According to Lee Willis, these addresses were probably given at the Exchange Club in Tallahassee, which met at the Cherokee Hotel until it closed.

Bertha N. Baldwin Letters

Scope and Contents This collection contains the letters written by Bertha Baldwin while overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces as a dietitian during World War I, 1914-1918. They are addressed to Miss Anna May Tracy, Florida State College for Women and Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. Some letters are typed and some are manuscript, and were written from Paris, France, but two are written during her travels in the country. "The trip up the Marne" includes what she termed "My first trip east - Oct. 25 - from the Gare de l'Est." Bird and Ulmer Papers

The Bird and Ulmer papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, land deeds, tax papers, political and other speeches, resolutions, and papers pertaining to church, lodges, last will, accounts of executors of estates, reports of estate, division of land, and division of slaves with values assigned. These papers pertain chiefly to the plantations of Bunker Hill, Nacossa, and Freelawn, which flourished before the Civil War. The majority of the papers are dated from the 1850s through the late 1800s, although a handful are from the 1920s.

Bob Taggart papers

Typed autobiographical sketch of Bob Taggart, addressed to "My Dear Jerry." Contains reminiscences of Florida during the 1920s and his acquaintance with Jerry Willams Carter. Letter also covers his life in Texas as a boy and his many adventures throughout his varied careers as a telegraph operator, sailor, soldier, farmer and salesman. Brumby Family Papers

Scope and Contents The Brumby Family Papers consist of newspaper clippings, biographies, and a diary related to the Brumby Family as well as information on the Brumby Rocker, a rocking chair produced by the Brumby Chair Company. The diary entitled, "Diary of Our Florida Trip From Marietta, GA" covers a camping trip of the Family by mule drawn wagon through Florida in the Winter of 1884-85. Captain Hugh Black Papers

Scope and Contents This item is a letter from Captain John Rogers Vinton at Fort New Smyrna, Florida and dated 1840. Addressed to his mother, it was written on his birthday and he wrote: "Since my last birthday, another year has passed over my head, and brought me to that period when it is my wont to make a retrospect of the past and pour out my thoughts to you. It has been a year of exile from civilized life - but not altogether profitless, and by no means an unhappy one..." Captain William Henry Chase Letter

Corliss. The majority of the papers are related to railroads, various railway companies that Corliss worked for, and publications about railroads. Topics include the Florida East Coast Railway, the Illinois Central Railroad Company, the Association of American Railroads, Abraham Lincoln, Florida, public relations, and his book, MAIN LINE OF MID-AMERICA. Carter Collection

Scope and Contents This collection consists of two documents, one a sales contract in Old German, and the other an executory contract in the Danish language. The sales contract is a manuscript document in Old German script on parchment, dated Altona, Germany, November 25, 1782, and signed by the Provisor of the Town Church, Holy Spirit Church. The contract is between the Holy Spirit Church and Mrs. Sophia Hedwig Witt, whereby she purchased the rights to certain burial grounds in the Church Cemetery of Altona, with the right to build a burial vault for up to 46 bodies.
