Bank of Florida Letter

Scope and Contents

The three page letter, signed by E.G. Booth, secretary to D.S. Kennedy, Esq. of New York, gives a list of drafts drawn on several individuals and then the details of a bill of lading covering 41 bales of cotton, all being sent for discount. The postscript refers to the financial difficulties then existing in Florida banking circles.

Captain Hugh Black Papers

Scope and Contents The papers include letters and one diary written during the Civil War (1863-1864) by Black to his wife, Mary Ann Black, from various places in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia and contain descriptions of army life and of the battlefields. There is also a series of letters and accounts (1901-1913) between Black and a Tallahassee merchant, Julius Diamond, two land deeds (1857-1858) relating to land of the Forbes' Purchases, and a letter to Black from J.B. Whitfield, Treasurer of the State of Florida and later a Supreme Court Justice. Clement Acton Griscom Papers

These papers include a letter from Clement Acton Griscom to his son Lloyd, who served as a foreign diplomat to Japan in the early 1900s. Also included is a small Christmas gift card signed "From Bronson Winthrop," and a small envelope addressed to Col. Lloyd Griscom, care of Miss Griscom, Water Oak Plantation, Tallahassee, Florida. The fourth item in the collection is a letter from G. Leslie Isaac to "Col. Griscom" at Luna Plantation, Tallahassee, concerning a trip to a fair and a car purchase. Includes MSS 0-304.

Gramling Civil War Diary

Scope and Contents The two items in this collection are a copy of a typescript made by Clifton Paisley from the original holograph diary and a biographical sketch of the author of the diary, Wilbur W. Gramling. The original of the diary, which the donor described as being in "small handwriting and some of it is illegible because the ink has badly faded," was found among the belongings of the late Owen Irvin Gramling Sr. of Tallahassee, founder of O. I. Gramling and Company and nephew of the author. The original has subsequently come into the possession of O. I. Gramling Jr. of Tallahassee. Mary Bates Letters

Scope and Contents Two letters written by Mary Bates of Tallahassee, Florida. Transcriptions are included with each original letter. One letter is written from Dudley, Massachusetts. Both letters are addressed to a Charles Dana, Jr. of Woodstock, Vermont. In one letter, dated April 11, 1845, Bates gives a vivid description of a sea voyage from New York via Nassau to Florida. According to the letter, during the course of the voyage a leak was discovered in the ship and at the same time hay (a large portion of the cargo) caught fire, so for some days all aboard were in serious peril.
