Scope and Contents Two letters written by Mary Bates of Tallahassee, Florida. Transcriptions are included with each original letter. One letter is written from Dudley, Massachusetts. Both letters are addressed to a Charles Dana, Jr. of Woodstock, Vermont. In one letter, dated April 11, 1845, Bates gives a vivid description of a sea voyage from New York via Nassau to Florida. According to the letter, during the course of the voyage a leak was discovered in the ship and at the same time hay (a large portion of the cargo) caught fire, so for some days all aboard were in serious peril. The May Ryburn Papers contain a variety of materials related to Ryburn's personal and professional life. Ryburn lived in both Chicago and Miami and worked as a journalist and English teacher. Included are her personal and travel journals, correspondence, materials used in her teaching career, photographs, published works, and genealogy information and records. The collection contains letters to Ryburn from Eleanor Roosevelt and Florida Governor Leroy Collins.

From content of the letter, it is clear that Mr. Stephens came to Florida and acquired a plantation at Rosanna, near Quincy, and was in the process of building a house which he hoped to have nearly completed by the time his family would arrive. They were to travel by coastal vessel and disembark at St. Marks or Apalachicola Bay, and travel to Tallahassee by "Hack...from whence it will be easy to get home." The letter was written on genuine birch bark by Mrs. S. L. Cawthon, October 2, 1914, while on vacation at Springfield, Vermont, and was addressed to "My Dear Girls." The letter is quite legible and contains some excellent descriptions of the areas in Vermont where she was vacationing.

This collection is comprised of two letters. The first letter, dated 1896 and written on British Museum stationary bearing an impression of the British Arms, was written by Garnett to "My dear Forman," regarding a Museum copy of Hero and Leander. Forman is probably Henry Buxton Forman (1842-1917), most famous for his editions of the work of Shelley and Keats. The second letter, not dated, was written by Edmund Gosse of London to "Dear Le Gallienne.", possibly Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947).

The Hancock Antarctic Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, books, pamphlets, film reels, and memorabilia collected by Robert E. Hancock, Jr. during and after his stay in the Antarctic. The collection gives some insight into the problems of supply, storage, food, housing, and entertainment required for work in such a remote environment.

Photocopies of papers about Confederate Army Papers of Robert E. Lester, who served as Second Lieutenant in Company C, Fifth Florida Calvary. The Regiment was composed of eight companies of cavalry under the command of Colonel George W. Scott. D.W. Gwynn was Captain of Company C.

The Roscoe Ralph Oglesby Collection is comprised of personal correspondence and memorabilia. The correspondence, dated November 26, 1928 to May 17, 1934, includes letters from Harrel N. This is a collection of personal letters written by Thomas Burns (76th Air Base Squadron) during World War II. Burns wrote from Hendricks Field, Sebring, Florida to Mary Donnelly in Massachusetts. He mostly wrote of his experiences and activities on the base. While the letters do not deal with Florida or World War II, they do offer a glimpse into courtship during that era and life on an air base.
