Joanna Wilson Civil War Collection

Photocopies of Civil War items consisting of a 4-page letter, a sketch of "Concise View of Charleston Harbor, and two envelopes photographed front and back. The letter and sketch are from Jas. V.D. Loregin, Altona, Georgia, to Miss Joanna Wilson, Gainesville, Alabama. The letter, addressed to "Miss Joe," contains several good accounts of battles against the "Federals." each object in the sketch is numbered with a note attached that bears the same numbers thus identifying objects included in the sketch.

John Calvin Wright papers and addresses

This collection consists of 17 bound volumes of papers and addresses by Wright. They are typescripts with clippings, pamphlets and mounted material relating to Wright's career with the U.S. Office of Education. The date range is from 1917 to 1946. Each volume has a table of contents and each article has separate pagination. There is a duplicate volume for volume 7. The volumes have been catalogued and are shelved with Special Collections rare books. The call number is LC1045 .W75 1923

John D. Bates, Sr. papers

Holograph letter written by John D. Bates, Sr. in 1863 to his son, John D. Bates, Jr. of Boston, Mass. The letter relates to the capture of the Confederate cruiser FLORIDA. Also discusses briefly France's offer of the Mexican crown to Maximilian. Along with the letter and its envelope, there are two enclosures. One is a holograph letter from Captain William Lull (1863) to John D. Bates, Sr. in regard to his ship. The other is a handwritten sheet of instructions on firing a furnace.

John D. Gray letter

This item is an original letter bearing the signature of John D. Gray, Tallahassee, Florida, March 24, 1836, addressed to Philip Ford. The letter discussed "End Plates" and "Spikes;" evidently to be used in the construction of the St. Joseph-Lake Wimico Railroad, the first railroad built in Florida.

John Forbes journal and letter by Dr. Coker

Photocopy of a typescript of a letter written to Mr. William Simpson containing the second half of the Forbes Journal. The first half of the journal was published in the Florida Historical Quarterly. The journal covers the period of Friday May 27, 1803 to Friday June 3, 1803. Concerned with Mr. Forbes talks to the Creek Chiefs at Hickory Ground, May 1803, Indian debts and William Bowles.

John M. House Civil War Letters

Photostats of Civil War letters by John M. House written from a U.S. Military Prison, Feb. 24, 1865 to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. House, Knoxville, Tenn.; John and his brother Samuel were in U.S. Military prisons at different locations (John at Johnsons Island and Samuel at Castle William, Governors Island, New York Harbor): John's letter mentions his brother and other members of the family, but he wrote chiefly about an exchange of prisoners which was taking place at Johnsons Island.

Also in Special Collections are letters by Samuel House to his parents (MSS 1965-142).

John Rodman letter regarding Spanish Land Grants

Letter from John Rodman to Joseph Reed Ingersoll on behalf of a Mr. Tibball seeking to place a claim before Congress to obtain indemnification for losses sustained by him, in consequence of his being prevented from cutting timber on land granted to him by the Spanish government, before his grant should be confirmed by the U. S. Government.

Other names mentioned are: Mr. Douglas, the District Attorney; Dr. Peck; Mr. Aken, Land Agent; Mr. Rawls; Judge Story; the Duke of Alagon, the Court of Punnsoritis, and Don Pedro de Vargas.

Joseph Lannutti Papers

Abstract

The collection consists of a wide range of documents maintained by FSU Physics professor Dr. Joseph Lannutti over the course of his professional career. Dr. Lannutti established the High Energy Physics group at Florida State University in 1957, started the FSU-FAMU College of Engineering in 1982, and began the Florida State University Supercomputer Computations Research Institute in 1984. The collection was a gift of the Lannutti family to Florida State University in 2003.

Scope and Contents The Ladd Journal and papers consist of a journal labeled "Property of Fred Ladd" and contains 217 pages with 587 accounts listed, and the "abstract of title of George W. Ladd of Bangor, Maine, to lands in Wakulla County, Florida, purchased at U.S. Marshal sale." The title includes "Lands in Forbes Purchase" and shows John Beard, noted Registrar of those days, as receiver to settle titles of lands in Forbes Purchases. Also included are "The J. & N. Hamlin Land & Heirs account with Daniel Ladd," and an invoice "Wakulla Camp to D. This item is a land patent covering sale of public land in the state of Virginia by the Commonwealth of Virginia to Hugh George of the County of Pittsylvania, Virginia, dated June 23, 1798. The land patent, which was filled out in manuscript, is of rather stiff vellum and bears the seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the signature of Governor James Wood.

This item is a United States certificate of transfer of public land in "The Tallapoosa Land District Alabama," (1845) to Pul-sey, one of the Creek Tribe of Indians. The transfer of land to Pul-Sey was, "by virtue of a Treaty between the United States and the said Creek Tribe of Indians, made by the 24th day of March 1832." The certificate is dated July 9, 1845.
