Fessenden, Maine Senator and soon to be Secretary of the Treasury, May 10, 1864 sent from New York during the Civil War. 3 pages, 8vo, New York. With a copy written by Smith of his letter to Secretary of War Stanton, reporting to the government on Florida affairs. Smith refers to the mission of Lincoln's Assistant Secretary John Hay, who failed in his attempt to bring Florida back into the Union. 6 1/2 pages, 8vo (New York, April 18, 1864). Letter sent two days prior to South Carolina's declaration of independence from the Union, offering Florida's assistance in obtaining possession of the forts in Charleston Harbor. A significant document indicating Florida's intent to join South Carolina in what would become the American Civil War (Florida became the third state to secede from the Union on January 10, 1861). Letter from Union soldier Samuel W. Wolcott to his brother, Eben P. Wolcott, a soldier elsewhere, May 26, 1863, sent from St. Augustine during the Civil War. 3 ¼ pages, 4to, St. Augustine. Letter describes conditions in St. Augustine and the possibility of furloughs, as well as Samuel's recent duty as census-taker for the area. Includes transcript.

The Wolcotts were from Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Sam Wolcott was a Private in Co. F, 7th CT Vols., and his younger brother Eben was in the 28th CT Vols. Eben died of disease in 1863, and Samuel was killed in action in August 1864.

1.) Framed photograph of a group of Tallahassee citizens assembled on the porch of Mrs. B. C. Lewis for the Lewis family reunion. Pictured are Hale T. Blocker, George W. Betton, Mrs. Reinette J. Gamble, Mrs. Sarah L. Lewis, Mrs. M. L. Demilly and others.

2.) Housed in an open frame, a handwritten booklet containing a collection of biographies and signatures of Tallahassee citizens, many of whom attended the Lewis family reunion.

Lieutenant Wheelock military application

This item is a manuscript application by T. B. Wheelock, 1st Lieutenant, Dragoons, Black Creek, Clay County, East Florida dated June 4, 1836, to the Hon. Lewis Cap, Secretary of War, Washington, D.C., in which he states that he has heard that a new Regiment of Dragoons is being formed, and "I beg leave to request to be considered a candidate for a captaincy." This application pertains to the Seminole War in Florida. The reverse side is stamped "Steam-Boat" and is post-marked Charleston, S.C., indicating that it was taken on board a river boat and transported to Charleston to connect with regular mail.

The Loren E. Jackson manuscript "Epilogue to a War Story" documents Lieutenant Colonel Loren E. Jackson's experience as a prisoner of war when he was shot down during D-Day from his B-17 that he piloted with the 385th Bomb Group during World War II. His manuscript details his encounter with the German Gerhard Graf von Schwerin who he met in the 1960s after not seeing him since he was interrogated by him. Jackson recounts the conversation he had with General and touches on multiple subjects, such as German memory of war, behaviors of the Germans, morale, and the surrendering of Germany.

This collection consists of two printed advertisement cards of M. A. Cawthon, General Merchandise Store, and they show no date but give information evidencing that one is older than the other. One of the cards was printed with the name "M. A. Cawthon, Lake De Funiak, - Florida" with "de Funiak Springs" stamped over the original name. This card was in use between 1881 and 1883. The other card was printed with the name "M. A. Cawthon & Son, de Funiak Springs, Florida." This card was in use in 1883 and after. Both cards are unique in format and wording.
