Rabindranath Tagore Collection

Abstract

The collection contains correspondence between Rabindranath Tagore and Dr. Arthur and Mayce Seymour, as well as other friends and family. Also included in the collection are biographical materials related to Tagore's life in both India and the United States. Tagore's writings are included in the collection with works of literary criticism and analysis of his writing. The collection also contains artwork by the Tagores and photographs.

Richard Garnett and Sir Edmund Gosse Letters

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of two letters. The first letter, dated 1896 and written on British Museum stationary bearing an impression of the British Arms, was written by Garnett to "My dear Forman," regarding a Museum copy of Hero and Leander. Forman is probably Henry Buxton Forman (1842-1917), most famous for his editions of the work of Shelley and Keats. The second letter, not dated, was written by Edmund Gosse of London to "Dear Le Gallienne.", possibly Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947).

Richard Keith Call Letter

This letter, signed by R. K. Call is as follows: "Dear Sir. I have received your kind letter and have but a minute to say I am Much obliged to you and that John W. Smith of Quincy Florida should be appointed keeper of the light house at Appalachicola."

Abstract

The Hancock Antarctic Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, books, pamphlets, film reels, and memorabilia collected by Robert E. Hancock, Jr. during and after his stay in the Antarctic. The collection gives some insight into the problems of supply, storage, food, housing, and entertainment required for work in such a remote environment.

Robert E. Lester Confederate Army Papers

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of papers about Confederate Army Papers of Robert E. Lester, who served as Second Lieutenant in Company C, Fifth Florida Calvary. The Regiment was composed of eight companies of cavalry under the command of Colonel George W. Scott. D.W. Gwynn was Captain of Company C.

The collection includes copies of the following items: Muster Roll Company C Scott's Batln. Cavalry. Special Order dated Sept. 3, 1863. Special Order dated Nov. 3, 1863. Letter dated Nov. 3, 1863. Pay Receipt dated Sept. 3, 1864. Approved sick furlough dated February 1, 1865.

The Civil War letters and papers of Roderick Gaspero and James Kirkpatrick Shaw, dated 1861 to 1864, consist of letters from them to their sister, Mrs. Jesse Shaw Smith, a letter from A.M. Harris, C.S.A., describing the burial of R.G. Shaw after his death in battle, 5/28/1864, a newspaper article from Atlanta entitled: "Officers' Dream of Death Fulfilled to the Letter", a photo of R.G. Shaw, and xeroxed copies of "The history and military connections of the family of Gaspero Sweet".

The Roscoe Ralph Oglesby Collection is comprised of personal correspondence and memorabilia. The correspondence, dated November 26, 1928 to May 17, 1934, includes letters from Harrel N. Tague and representatives of the YMCA as well as a letter from Governor George C. Perry of Virginia (18 items). The memorabilia, dated 1929 to 1945, includes programs from various stage productions and YMCA functions and a signed appointment from Governor Perry (44 items).

This is a collection of personal letters written by Thomas Burns (76th Air Base Squadron) during World War II. Burns wrote from Hendricks Field, Sebring, Florida to Mary Donnelly in Massachusetts. He mostly wrote of his experiences and activities on the base. While the letters do not deal with Florida or World War II, they do offer a glimpse into courtship during that era and life on an air base.

Photostat of a letter written August 21, 1861, by W.F. Barr at C.H., Culpepper, Virginia to S. Bleckley Esq. in Anderson, South Carolina. He wrote from the Confederate Hospital that he and "several others of our Regiment" were confined with measles. He gave as his location: "We are now encamped six miles north of where we were when Mr. Hammond was here at a place called Germantown..." Others mentioned in the letter were: Tom Bagwell, Jacob Maudlin, Mrs. Hubbard, B.A. McAlster, Jas. Sloan, and A.O.N. Call.
