Bank of Florida Letter

Scope and Contents

The three page letter, signed by E.G. Booth, secretary to D.S. Kennedy, Esq. of New York, gives a list of drafts drawn on several individuals and then the details of a bill of lading covering 41 bales of cotton, all being sent for discount. The postscript refers to the financial difficulties then existing in Florida banking circles.

Joseph T. Bannan papers

Scope and Contents

This collection follows Joseph T. Bannan as he served aboard the U.S.S. Panamint (AGC13). He was under the command of Admiral Arthur D. Struble. On this ship were photograph developers that obtained the picture of renowned wartime journalist, Ernie Pyle, lying dead on the island of Le Shima. Only two copies were ever made and the original was destroyed shortly after its creation to prevent a decline in American morale. This collection contains a photocopy of one of the original copies owned by Bannan.

Scrapbook of the Administration of the Official War Ballot in the Office of Secretary of State. A project done by Barbara Morrison, 'intern' in the Office of the Secretary of State. Subject is World War II absentee war ballots. It documents the administration of Public Law 712 (Federal) which provides for absentee voting by service personnel serving away from place of residence.

The collection contains an oral history transcript interview of George Barbour.  It also contains Barbour's unofficial flight journal. Also included are memoirs by his wife, Hazel Barbour, of life on the home front in South Portland, Maine. This collection pertains to Technician Fifth Grade Zeddie P. Barron, Jr., who was stationed in Virginia, Kentucky, Ireland, Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany between 1943 and 1945. As a clerk in the 552nd Railhead Company, Barron was attached to the First Engineer Special Brigade. The collection contains personal letters sent from Barron to his wife throughout his period of service, military documents including a ration book, Barron's military record and entrance physical, as well as newspaper clippings, envelopes, and an unpublished poem by Eugene S. Masters reacting to the use of the atomic bomb.

Bartholomew Lynch Journal

Journal in manuscript kept by US Army Private Bartholomew M. Lynch, commanded by Lieutenant John Graham during the Florida War. Early entries document his training and travel from New York to Florida on board the "Southern liner called America." Includes an eyewitness description of the captive Seminole leader Osceola, dated May 2, 1837.

Pages one and two are missing; page three begins with an entry for October 3, 1836.

Robert Otto Bauer collection

This collection relates to Technician Fifth Grade Robert Otto Bauer who served with the 100th Infantry Division Band and subsequently Company C, 8th Armored Infantry Battalion, 20th Armored Division, in the European Theater during World War II. The collection includes artifacts, German World War II pilot flying helmets, photographs, veteran association newsletters, and ephemera. One unpublished photograph includes actress Ingrid Bergman posing with Bauer during the war. Photographs and memorabilia related to Bauer's wife, Joyce Ann Bauer, are also included in the collections.

Clyde Campbell Beaver collection

This collection contains artifacts, papers, and photographs that belonged to Clyde Campbell Beaver from his time serving in the U.S. Army in the Corps of Engineers as a draftsman during World War II in the Pacific Theater.  The artifacts include his draftsman tools, jacket, camera, and Bronze Star.  The papers include official Army documents, newspaper clippings about Clyde, a personal letter to his wife, Adele Beaver, and a telegram.  The photographs include photographs of Clyde in the Philippines, photographs with his wife and mother, and photographs he took himself.

Walter Carl Beckham collection

This collection relates to Colonel Walter Carl Beckham who served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a P-47 fighter pilot with the 353rd Fighter Group in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. He was credited 18 aerial victories. He was shot down and subsequently became a German Prisoner of War. He was the recipient of the Distingquished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Air Medal, and Legion of Merit. This collection contains Beckham's medals, badges, pins, photographs, veteran's items, and newspaper articles.

Bellamy-White Duel

This collection contains a three-page letter by Edwin Pugsley that gives some background on Senator William White and Abraham Bellamy, both of Monticello, Florida, principals of the duel, and a detailed description of the "English Duelling Pistols" chosen by them. Also, how Mr. Pugsley came into possession of the information about the historic duel and of the pistols.

The pistols, still in Mr. Pugsley's possession as of the writing of the letter in 1958, are illustrated in a little book Famous guns from famous collections by H. W. Bowman.

Addresses delivered by former Florida Circuit Judge Ben C. Willis and an article written by Willis for the Florida Heritage Foundation News and Views. These materials are useful to researchers studying Tallahassee life during the 1930s. According to Lee Willis, these addresses were probably given at the Exchange Club in Tallahassee, which met at the Cherokee Hotel until it closed.

Benjamin Epstein papers

This collection contains a transcript provided by the Reichelt Program for Oral History. Benjamin Epstein was a Jewish American serviceman who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946, and he trained at Fort Logan, Colorado. He was transported on the U.S.S. Dorchester, which was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in February 1943. He described escaping from the sinking ship and swimming to one of two lifeboats. He was picked up by the U.S.S. Escambia and taken to Greenland. He remained in Greenland until January 1945 where he was transferred to Fort Totten, New York and remained there until discharged in 1946.
