Arthur and Mayce Seymour Collection

Scope and Contents

The Arthur and Mayce Seymour Collection, in addition to containing correspondence between them, other family members, and friends, has articles written by the Seymours and many poems by Mayce. A major portion of the collection consists of photographs taken by the Seymours during their trips to India and China in the 1920s. Numerous paintings and sketches made by Mayce during these travels are also included.

This collection relates to Ensign Madison D. Farnum, a staff member for the commander of the Amphibious Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. Farnum participated in the campaigns for Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Okinawa. Farnum was assigned on the Flagship USS Eldorado under Admiral R.K.Turner in the South Pacific Theater 1944-1945. This collection consists of a diary of G. Frank Hatheway regarding his life and work, as well as examples of poetry, and a funeral announcement for his daughter, Julia. A scrapbook kept by Hatheway (originally MSS 0-138) is also part of the collection. The scrapbook contains a collection of poetry, clippings of historical interest, old prints, and pictures. The poetry is a mix of poetry Hatheway copied and original compisitions. A page of music in manuscript form, The Indian Maid, may be an original composition as well.

This collections covers the experiences of Mike Lazur during WWII and also includes information on his brothers, George and Joseph. All three brothers became crew on a ship at some point during the war. The main focus of the documents is around Mike, who went at sea at 18-years-old in 1939. The collection includes the transcripts of some poems Mike wrote while at sea, Mike's memoirs and photocopies of books, and a web page covering ships in which Mike traveled during the war.
