This oral history describes Birchwood's time in the Merchant Marines Service and with the U.S. Border Patrol. He outlines various trips to Europe, South America, and Central America. He details various stories of working in banana boats, catching illegal immigrants, working on a cargo ship, and traveling to Guantanamo Naval Base and the Panama Canal. Some of the locations mentioned within this oral history include Miami, Tampa, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, El Paso, Boston, Cuba, and Aruba.

32 page interview covering John E. Schmidt's life from birth and early childhood to his military career and life on base in the Panama Canal Zone. The vast majority of the interview concerns life in the Canal Zone from leisure activities to medical matters.

This collection consists of the Official Entertainment records for Florida State University President J. Stanley Marshall from March 1969 through July 1976 and a Photograph Album of the Marshalls' trip to the Canal Zone and the Republic of Panama with Lawton Chiles.
