This collection relates to Lyle D. Armstrong and his service in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The collection contains a veteran’s questionnaire where he shares his experience in service and recalls a memory of being in Manila when the Japanese Envoys came to speak to General MacArthur. He also mentions that he kept in contact with some of the men he met in service. The collection also contains photographs of Armstrong and his three older brothers, who also served in World War II.

Content Description

This collection relates to Hazel Louis Bowman who worked for the Signal Corps and lived in India with the American Red Cross for two years. Bowman's collection contains six full boxes, one oversize box, a phono records box, and two photograph boxes. Four of the boxes include letters written to and from Hazel to her parents, family, neighbors, and friends. The collection also contains an oral history transcript, newsletters and bulletins, American Red Cross publications, her diary, a book written by Bowman, photograph albums, and ephemera.

The collection of Clarke M. Brandt contains an oral history transcript and various publications about army life during World War II. In it are examples such as George (Bob) Caron who was a tail gunner on the "Enola Gay" B-29 Bomber. The oral history includes Caron's eyewitness account of the bomb being dropped on Hiroshima. Also included are pamphlets and newsletters including "War Buddies," which covers the relationship between a soldier and his canine companion through his years as a member of the US Marine Corps. "War Buddies" is written by Earle Welch and Dick Roberts.

This collection relates to Thornton M. Embrey who served with Company D, 3118th Signal Service Group, during World War II. This collection contains transcripts of radio messages related to the announcement of the surrender of Germany in May 1945 and Japan in August 1945. There are a few additional documents and photographs related to Embrey’s postwar service in the U.S. Army.

The majority of the collection centers around his years of service in the Army Air Corps, from 1944-1945. Contained in the collection are folders with material created by Harrington or those around him, including letters, journal and memoir entries, and photographs. This collection relates to Gretchen Marie F. and Leslie J. Vreeland who were civilian defense workers living in Hawaii from April 1944-July 1946 at Barber's Point Naval Air Station in Oahu. The collection includes documents, ephemera, artifacts, photographs, newspapers, and maps that document the Vreeland's time in Hawaii.
