This photograph scrapbook assembled by U.S. Navy sailor Herbert J. Thurber, Jr. photographically records landing craft LST 558 and crew throughout its journey during World War II. LST 558 made stops throughout the Philippine Islands, New Guinea, Japan, and the Pacific Theatre. The cities visited were Linguyan Bay, Hollandia, Subic Bay, Lake Sentai, Pohy Wog, Sapporo, Yokosuka, Saipan, Aomori Honshu, Otaru, and Tokyo.

Scope and Contents Henry Louis Hill served as a captain with the U.S. Army's 97th Infantry, Field Artillery, S-3 Battalion during World War II. This collection contains a veteran's questionnaire from Louis Hill; a one-page faded cartoon of native women on Guadalcanal; and a brief (less than one page) recount of how Hill came upon a Japanese lantern, which is also part of the collection. The collection also contains a black and white photograph of the president of Florida State College for Women (FSCW), Dr. Edward Conradi, buying supposedly the first defense bond issued in Tallahassee, FL, from Miss Mart Pierson (later married to Henry Louis Hill). Carl's letters to Marion comprise the bulk of the collection and detail his college experiences as well as his training and overseas military experience as a United States Marine Corp officer during and after the war. During his career as a Marine, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, then went to San Francisco to start his voyage in the Pacific.
