Jane Borg papers

This collection contains two oral histories; one with Dr. Philip Gilman, Jr. and one with James Izumizaki. It also includes the reprint of a letter by Pvt. Lavern Borg, Jr. written on April 2, 1945. The letter tells about his experiences with the 5th Marine Division of the U.S. Marine Corp in the battle of Iwo Jima. The next document includes a service record and medallist dated June 1967, January 1969, and August 1973. A pamphlet collected by the Pajaro Valley Arts Council, California entitled Nihen Bunka Japanese Culture: One hundred years in Pajaro Valley is also in the collection.

This collection contains an unpublished biography of Joseph Peters entitled "An Ordinary Hero." Peters served as a medical doctor in the Philippines during World War II and retired a Colonel. The collection also includes a letter about his 1952 retirement and a letter to his daughter about an injury stating that the initial injury was sustained upon capture by the Japanese in 1942.

Louis Goldblum Oral History transcript

Lt. Louis Goldbrum (U.S. Army, 1941-1947) was assigned to the 1st Aircraft Warning Company as the company photographer. This collection contains an oral history transcript where he discusses the evacuation of Bague, Philippines, where he was stationed, following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He was captured by the Japanese and remained a POW until January 1945.

Milton J. Rosen Photographs

This collection includes photographs taken in the Philippines during the later years of WWII. The photographs were taken by Milton J. Rosen and the 2766 Photomapping Battalion, 25th Engineers. These photos were taken over the course of a year from 1945-1946. They include buildings, streets, daily life (of both the soldiers and citizens), Army vehicles, and other landmarks of the Philippines. The collection also includes a photograph of General Eisenhower and General Styer. The photographs are centralized around Manila and Banguio. Several landmarks make reoccuring appearances, such as the Chinese Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, the Roosevelt Club, and the Pasig River.

The collection is from PFC (T/Sgt) Richard Frake's military records and ephemera, including training certificates for Pre-RADAR VIII, Bomb Reconnaissance School, and Radio/Radar Repairman. The collection also has unofficial certificates proving that Frakes "officially" passed the equator and became a "shellback" on board the USAT Pemant. There are also documents and ephemera about Japanese POWs surrendering.

Robert Hoffmann papers

Robert McKay transcript

This forty page oral history interview transcript relates to Robert Mckay who was a student and interned by the Japanese at Baguio in the Philippine Islands during World War II.  The interview was conducted with McKay at a Baguio Internee reunion. The transcript covers McKay's experiences before, during, and after internment.

Thomas C. Cartwright papers

Thomas C. Cartwright served as the pilot of the B-24 bomber, Lonesome Lady, in the 494th Bombardment Group, 7th Air Force. His plane was shot down over Japan at the end of July 1945. Cartwright and one other member of the bomber crew were transported elsewhere, while the majority of the crew was interred in prison in Hiroshima, Japan. All those crewmen were killed when the US dropped the atomic bomb on that city.

The collection contains correspondence, articles, and testimonies related to the bombing of Hiroshima and discovering the fate of Cartwright's bomber crew.

Tillman Joe Rutledge collection

This collection relates to Sergeant Tillman Joe Rutledge, who served in the 31st Infantry Regiment of the United States Army in the Far East's Philippine Division. After the fall of Bataan in April 1942, he was captured as a prisoner of war until 1945. This collection consists of one box of personal papers, including the original diary he kept during his internment and photocopies. It also contains an original draft and signed copy of his book My Japanese POW Diary Story; a 36-page oral history transcript; letters to and from his family; newspaper clippings; various government documents; and photographs.

Dorothy "Dot" Douglas Whittle collection

Abstract Dorothy "Dot" Douglas Whittle was ten years old when the Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941. The Japanese Army interned the Douglas family in civilian prisoner of war camps for the duration of World War II, including Camp John Hay, Camp Holmes, and Bilibid Prison. During this period, Whittle kept a diary to document everyday life in camp, including her schoolwork, schedule, games, and church activities. The US Army liberated the civilian prisoners at Bilibid Prison in February 1945 and the Douglas family subsequently repatriated to the United States. Hugh Zeigler served with the 454th Heavy Bomb Aviation Ordnance Company, handling and caring for bombs, during World War II in the Philippine Islands.
