Bird and Ulmer Papers

Scope and Contents The Bird and Ulmer papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, land deeds, tax papers, political and other speeches, resolutions, and papers pertaining to church, lodges, last will, accounts of executors of estates, reports of estate, division of land, and division of slaves with values assigned. These papers pertain chiefly to the plantations of Bunker Hill, Nacossa, and Freelawn, which flourished before the Civil War. The majority of the papers are dated from the 1850s through the late 1800s, although a handful are from the 1920s.

Collection also includes a letter of introduction of James E. Broome, Tallahassee, Fla., to Hon. Jacob Thompson, Washington City, and a long handwritten letter of Governor Bragg, Raleigh, N.C., and other important papers show that Dr. Bradford was a well-known and prominent citizen. Scope and Contents The Florida State University (FSU) President's Executive Committee Minutes consist of agendas, memoranda, minutes, reports, and other attachments documenting the work of this organization during the early 1970s. Some of the topics frequently discussed were academic problems of minority students, student health services, visits by Florida legislators, student residence hall issues, drug abuse and drug education, and parking and traffic regulations. James Stanley Marshall was FSU President at this time. These records document FSU campus governance and activities in the early 1970s. Materials are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents The Mount Vernon Plantation (the name was later changed to Pickney Hills) was located in Jefferson County about seven miles east of Monticello, Florida with a view overlooking "Razor Lake," so named by Mr. Hollingsworth because of its shape. The number of slaves listed, the livestock listed, records of sales of farm products, purchases of supplies, and descriptions of different parcels of land shown in the Last Will of John Hollingsworth indicate that Mount Vernon Plantation covered rather extensive acreage. Scope and Contents Leatherbound notebook containing the manuscript diary and cash accounts ledger of an unnamed itinerant Baptist minister, active in the American Southeast. Diary entries describe visits to locations in Florida, including Crawfordville, Flat Creek, Sopchoppy, and Tallahassee; and in Alabama, including Decatur and Gadsen. Official activities described include delivering sermons on scripture and Biblical figures; officiating wedding ceremonies; and conducting Sunday school classes. Personal activities described include visits with congregation members, farming duties, and traveling among different congregations.

Scarborough, newspapers and clippings, personal letters, reports of blankets, provisions, and clothing required by Floridians in prison at Fort Delaware, promissory notes, receipts, invoices, and a typed copy of "Express-Supplement", a letter to an unknown newspaper editor by William T. Gregory in 1860, pertaining to the proposed secession from the Union by Florida and other states.

Scope and Contents The collection features items relating to clubs and organizations that Peggy Barker Teague was involved with during her years at Florida State College for Women, especially the Spirogira honor society, Tarpon Club, and the College Government Association. This includes newspaper clippings, ephemeral documents, and two scrapbooks containing similar documents and items. The largest item is a pillow with the Spirogira skull and cross bones.
